Today we talk about the history of the Flamingo Casino that was/has been located in Las Vegas since 1946. Originally it was Billy Wilkerson's idea to build a grand casino resort in the desert of Las Vegas. After getting started and running out of funds Benjamin Siegel jumped into the project after selling the El Cortez along with his partners. Siegel would begin to obsess over building the Flamingo and making it the best he could have. It had a grand opening in Dec of 1946 where many locals got their first chance to see the casino. Many know the Flamingo for being a mob ran casino although I don't believe this really started until after Siegel passed away in 1947. Greenbaum, Sedway and Lansky took over for a number of years. Into the late 60s, Kerkorian took over and into 1970 Hilton bought the Flamingo turning it into Flamingo Hilton. This was during the corporation boom in Las Vegas. Hilton owned it for a number of years until 2000 and then Caesars/Harrah's Entertainment bought it who are still running it until today. Flamingo is known for some of the most expensive casino memorabilia especially the original chips being upwards of $3000 for some. It would be a dream to own one of those one day. Hope you enjoy!
