Whether your original documents are hand-drawn engineering drawings, B&W photos, or maps, CCD scanner technology captures 16-bit grayscale (64,000 shades of grey). This process uses a dedicated monochrome channel for a much sharper clearer image. Conversely, CIS scanners only deliver an 8-bit grayscale (256 shades).

Avoid CIS scanners for scanning casino chips, they do not render accurate colors. Most All-in-One Scanner/Printer/Copier use CIS technology to keep costs down. I use an Epson Photo 4490 scanner with absolutely great results. It is old, has been discontinued, so you will have to find a current model. But Epson Photo scanners are the way to go.

BTW ... this scanner comes with an attachment that allows you to scan photo slides and negatives and make them into color images. A great feature if you want to digitize your old photos.
