Rich: I can no longer verify this as my sources are long dead. But it begins when I worked in Deadwood in the '50s & 60's and stayed at the Franklin Hotel. There was a blackjack room that periodically was open and one year i spoke with the owner or operator asking about the truth of the Aces & Eight dead hand story. Like others he had no info on the 5th card but did have great stories from the '80s. Years later I contacted a deadwood friend after I began collecting chips and had some from the Franklin. I asked my friend to go to the dealer and ask what kind of poker chips would have been used when Wild Bill was shot. The info that I got back was that chips were not used--just money. But I've heard other stories as well. If chips had been used they would have been ivories, of course.
