I buy Medjools from the Middle-East market, picked I think in Thermal or Coachella and someone else takes the risk of climbing the rickety ladders. Date palms are one of the few, maybe the only, commercial crop to be cut down when they grow too high, even though the palms can still bear fruit. Too hard and dangerous to climb up, so the farmers continually must plant new trees. Dates must be covered with bags lest they cross-pollinate or get dried by the sun and winds, so workers have to climb up for that, too. A difficult crop to grow!
