I get out and I am one of the few men in the terminal without a rifle or in a uniform.

First words I hear from anyone are "please surrender your passport now and we will return it to you upon your return flight to Spain."

I return to the terminal early and nobody knows what I'm talking about when I said "I'm here to pick up my passport so that I can return to Spain."

Luckily they found it 90 minutes later after looking all over for it and I was able to return to Spain. Talk about being stressed; here I am in Algiers with no passport and not knowing if they even know where it is... 😣
