John:
I send stuff to Australia (and other locations) on a regular basis. If it is only one or two items, you can mail it as a "flat" and depending upon location and weight, you can get by as cheaply as $2.25.\
For Priority Mail, you need to be sure that the customs forms show a total less then what the accepting country will allow with out docking the recipient additional $$$. It varies by country. For Australia, it is $300.
You can fit up to 60 items in 3 pages of 20 items in plastic sheets so that you can get the most out of the charges, but YES, it does cost a bit to get there, and even with "Priority" it STILL takes a month or more to get there.
Also, be sure to check the postal notifications to see it mail is even be accepted first, or else it will just sit on the shelf for a while.
Hope this helps.
John
