I agree it was not a good year for movies. The market is so fragmented - ignoring limited theatrical releases when the movies were unknown and the theatres were empty, you could only see Mank if you have Netflix (frankly, it bored me), Nomadland if you subscribe to Hulu, Soul if you have Disney+, etc. The time when avid theatre-goers could watch all the nominees took a holiday when the pandemic hit, and I think that drove a lack of interest in the Awards this year (in addition to righteous celebrity speech fatigue).
