as i understand it, there is a period of redemption in which you can cash out the chips for face value, usually a couple-three weeks. after that, the gaming control board requires that all chips collected go back to their original manufacturer i.e. paulson/bud jones etc. to be destroyed. this obviously doesn't include what people have collected or thrown in to their sock drawer.
