Sounds like an adventure. Have fun. I do not have any recommendations for lodging but I would suggest you try to
drive to Virginia City. I think the kids would enjoy seeing it. A very scenic drive from the Reno area just about 25 miles.
Also, I hope you're planning to drive around Lake Tahoe. Absolutely beautiful. Some hikes to be had to waterfalls, etc.
Sorry I can't help with the lodging choices. We stayed in the now defunct Harrah's property in Reno. Not very nice.
