I've driven Hawthorne Boulevard before, the road looks deceptively easy, just that last curve and you are down to sea-level or whatever the height of the flatlands are. But the curve is off-camber (like the one on Laurel Canyon Boulevard in Studio City). You pretty much have to keep your vehicle in low gear. The news reports Tiger was driving a Bentley. I wonder if he was familiar with the Palos Verdes area and where he was going so early in the morning.
For those who don't know - Palos Verdes Peninsula formed by the Newport Earthquake Fault buckling under the land and twisting it into surprisingly steep mountains.
