Quite some years ago, I was running for a proposed City Council seat. And a candidate in another proposed Council area asked me, would I like to be on a Slate he was preparing? "Democrats Support These Candidates!" I thanked him but said I wasn't a member of the Party and wouldn't they get mad if my name were on such a thing? To which he laughed and said, "That doesn't matter at all!" Ho-kayyyy, I replied somewhat uncertain.
And in another week, there it was, a flyer in blue ink entitled "Democrats Support These Fine Candidates for City Council . . ." with my name among others below. But the eye-opener was when my political pal showed me another flyer he had made, in red ink - "Republicans Support These Local Politicians for City Council!" And there was my name again!
With a wide grin, he explained: "I hand out the Republican flyers at places like Country Clubs where I think a lot of them will be. And the Democrats - well, they'll certainly be at Labor Union meetings and such. So I carry a stack of both flyers with me.
And the Party Leaders commend me on my hard work."
I guess the Democrats and the Republicans never get together to compare flyers . . .
