There was a scandal some years ago whereby mint employees were suspected of making error coins on purpose to sell on the outside. Eventually, the secret service actually confiscated some error coins scheduled for auction as “unauthorized issues”. There have been so many bizarre currency errors coming out lately, I can’t help thinking about that incident.
