I think one of the issues you have is lack of accountability for the media.
We have press regulation procedures here where anyone can complain to the regulator if broadcasting rules are breached (like fake news). If the broadcaster is found guilty punishments can range from an apology to a multi million pound fine.
So I think they do a fair bit more fact checking, and have reporters stationed all over the world so they can report the story first hand rather than just buying it from someone else who may or may not be reputable.
Your news channels are competing for audiences. Bigger numbers means a bigger cut from Maxwell or whoever else runs the network you are watching.
Over here all news stations are free to air. All you need is a TV. No cable or dish or internet at all. We get no sensationalised reporting as it’s not necessary.
