I know for a fact that there were newspaper articles written with full descriptions of the chips found in casinos, in detail (late-1800's)... and that it was customary to trade chips upon graduation from West Point, much earlier on, as described by two Georgia families, and one family in New York, with exactly what the trades entailed.
