Just recalling the Platinum Collection sale via eBay. About 15 years ago: October 2005.
Has there been any single sale of a chip & token collection larger that that in the last 15 years?
Price realized was the $1 million opening bid (or slightly larger?).
For more recent collectors, the Platinum Collection represented a large group of Nevada chips & tokens acquired over a number of years by a wealthy Colorado businessman. Some rare to very-rare!
I think Howdy helped him with building his collection, then Howdy marketed the sale, complete with a CD of the collection, plus special chip holders with a green band around each saying "Platinum Collection".
The result (from memory) was that a collector wanting the TOKENS was the winning bidder. He then sold off the chips to one (or a group) of other chip collectors. Some of them made their way to display cases at chip shows for a year or two afterward. I had one of them, in the original holder. It's around here somewhere!
Anyway, it was a noteworthy sale for its time, and perhaps, still holds the record for a single group-sale of casino chips & tokens.
Any other recollections about that sale, 15 years ago?
Merry Christmas everyone!
