OK, I'm starting to feel a little silly. I understand the El Rancho Vegas burned down like 60 years ago. I see so many of the house chips with the heavy black font for the value for sale that I often wonder whether they are real, but I haven't yet found any evidence that this was an exploited chip design.
But then I started seeing the older "opera house" chips showing up allegedly burned in the fire. All of them seem to be "perfectly" singed so you can still make them out, but perhaps enough to hide defects that you might see if they were bootlegs.
But now I see this one for sale that is supposed to be an error chip, with $5 on one side and $25 on the other. I think it's time to call BS on these chips.
Is there any chance that this abundance of fire-damaged chips from ERV are legit? I can't believe that they are...
