Any idea why 2.⁵ and not 2.5, 2,50 or 2.50...?

Also, I have found a few CD without periods after the C and D... along with combinations of Inc, Ltd and Co. Without the exact spelling, it might be difficult to pinpoint.

Is 2.⁵ an uncommon denomination in the US... and, if so, where is it common..? Maybe knowing that will help.
