Harvey Nyland - was a boar hunter. But on one hunt, the Boar got him instead! They have very sharp Tusks and can do a number on your legs if they get close to you. And they are not afraid to do that.
Years ago, some fruitcake imported European Boars to the Central California hills for a hunting club. The Boars escaped - and multiplied like wildfire. They enjoy eating acorns and their are abundant oaks all over the area. I've seen more than one on my trips in the back country; especially dangerous to drive at dawn or dusk as they will simply walk onto the roads and challenge your trucks. Sometimes I spot the piglets (boarlets?) too - so cute!
I don't know the particulars of Sheriff "Gimpy" Nyland's encounter - whether he was on horseback or hiking. You will need a fairly substantial rifle, you want to get 'em quick without wounding them. Look for them around oak trees or water holes. Then you have to get their bodies out to a road, they weigh in at - oh, I don't know - close to a ton? Well, good luck and . . .
I didn't mean to Boar you . . . with all this. But you knew that ending was coming!
