But I don't think the case was overstated.

The fact that you Mike doesn't see it happening constantly is because it isn't constantly occuring in the open. And often the only witnesses are silenced.

But I see it happen enough that that its safe to say that somewhere in this country someones basic human rights are being trampled on every day by the government (And I'm just talking about domestic incidents though clearly we see that if nothing else we are funding and supporting human rights violations arounds the globe.)
