AZORES ISLANDS

AZORES ISLANDS

The Azores Portuguese: Açores ,officially the Autonomous Region of the Azores (Região Autónoma dos Açores), is one of the two autonomous regions of Portugal (along with Madeira). It is an archipelago composed of nine volcanic islands in the Macaronesia region of the North Atlantic Ocean, about 1,360 km west of continental Portugal.
There are nine major Azorean islands and an islet cluster, in three main groups. These are Flores and Corvo, to the west; Graciosa, Terceira, São Jorge, Pico, and Faial in the centre; and São Miguel, Santa Maria, and the Formigas Reef to the east. They extend for more than 600 km and lie in a northwest–southeast direction. The islands were known in the fourteenth century In 1427, a captain sailing for Prince Henry the Navigator, rediscovered the Azores. Was that the Portuguese explored the area and claimed it for Portugal

ONLY THERE WERE TWO CASINOS IN THE AZORES, BOTH ON THE ISLAND OF S.MIGUEL (the main island), with only one functioning today.

Vale das Furnas

The first opening of the casino took place in the summer of 1933, after remodeling the old Assembly building, with two game rooms. In 1937, and with legal permission for the exploitation of games of chance (decree-law No. 26,860, of August 3, 1936) the building benefits from significant works, and was inaugurated on August 9, 1937. The building Casino Terra Nostra remains open to the public, now functioning only as a party room.
