Re: THE DEALER'S RESPONSE TO EXCESSIVE P&S

I don't care how this dealer defends the S/H fees. In my opinion that should be the Shipping and handling of the package. Ie. Postage, Envelope, Packing materials, tape etc. The costs that are mentioned should be reflected in the cost of the item before S/H. One thing that I don't understand is, if a seller has a chip that they are selling for another person why they would not place a minimum bid on that chip that would reflect the eBay costs and the minimal profit for the broker and his seller. As I understand. Listing fees are not that much. Commissions are relative to sale price over listing. Therefore, to create an example for discussion, by listing a $5 chip for $4.99 the dealer might be saving a few cents on a listing fee and making the price look more enticing but he will probably pay more on the back end with the commission when the chip sells. Add to that the fact that he is taking the RISK that they will have to sell at a loss. The buyer should not be held responsible for that risk and loss. If a dealer wants to assure himself and any client(s) that he has that they will make a profit they should place clear prices on the minimum bid to get that minimum return. Take that $5 chip. + .25(?)listing, + whatever minimum return the seller wants, say $2 + minimum for the broker for his fees and expenses, say $2 and you should put a minimum of $9.25 on that chip. Then if you sell it for $15 or more the dealer can split the excess with the seller based on an agreed %.

I question if this dealer is putting all these costs in their S/H what happens if they get a bidding war on the chip and it sells for a huge profit. Does the dealer than forgive the S/H since the sale more than covered all the listing, computer, relisting, shipping, standing in lines etc. I doubt it. Inflating the S/H just serves one purpose, to nickel and dime more profit. If a seller puts a reasonable open on a chip and it does not sell after say one relisting than maybe that is an indication that the item that is being sold can't support the cost to sell it. Sometimes you have to take the bad with the good. That is business. Not every sale should be expected to be at a profit. Especially on eBay. If a broker is good and fair with what he/she does, than while one sale may be at a loss they can still profit in the long run by balancing the big sales against those losses.
