The only "Good News" is you had a lazy clerk ~~

~~ who did not reach for the USPS Template (see below).
The max on a letter envelope thickness is 1/4-inch... Anything 1/4-inch thicker will not pass through the slot in the template without touching the upper/lower opening edges.
