And the answer is... Long vs Pointy, Short vs Flat

Thank you Robert Pardue. I contacted Reno Sweetie (Larry Hollibaugh) and he provided this information...

"I know exactly what the story is with Piñon Plaza $5s. Attached are 300dpi scans of both chips. The one with pointy cogs is their first issue, when they opened in 1995. By 2002 these chips were all well worn (BTS). In 2002 I found near new chips on the tables. All of the new-looking chips differed from the worn ones in that the cogs were flattened off. The images on Chip Guide are not good examples because the offset inlays chop off the main distinguishing differences, especially the 2002 version. To my eye, the text is also bolder on the newer version, but that’s not nearly as definitive as the cog differences."

With this information and the provided chip scans, I have updated the entries for both of these chips on ChipGuide.
