Hi Richard
My name is Steve Passalacqua and I am club member CH-044. I have been collecting gambling chips for over 35 years. There are many things going on here. Please let me share some of my experience with you.
I believe this to be GOOD information.
I collect Crest & Seal chips. I think I know a lot about them and how they sell. Let me tell you what I know about Crest & Seal chips their condition, rarity and demand.
I do not think the chips you have shown are in good condition. The inlays have all darkened with age. There are very few Crest & Seal Collectors that would say they are in good condition. Please look at a sample book scan of your chips from the maker, United States Playing Card Co. If more chips come out with good clean inlays your chip drops to about $10 each and sellable to about 4 people, it has happened. With this amount of exposure more chips could surface. They made this chip in 7 colors. I have seldom seen with 7 colors that only 100 chips were made each color. At the smallest amount 700 chips were made with most likely thousands. A buyer is taking a gamble buying a group of chips thinking they are the only ones, there could be thousands out there. No one knows if your source has more and will sell them later or is selling off the bad ones first, I have seen both happen. I have been doing eBay for 20 years and not many people will pay $200 for a Crest & Seal chip. The next chip you list might get $60 and the 3rd chip might get $25 and the 4th might not even sell. You are dealing with a very small market and demand drops rapidly. You posted “I didn’t expect there was anything valuable” which gives me the feeling you were into them fairly reasonable. You did come to the right place and got a great offer that you accepted. They were bought on a gamble by you and your buyer, you with little risk and your buyer in a bit deeper. Most serious chip collectors that buy extras of one chip want to get a good resale price to cover their risk.
I am happy to share my 35 years of chip collecting experience with you or anyone else. I hope you understand that you made two good deals. I wish you the best of luck in your chip collecting activities.
Having fun Steve
