A lot depends on composition; improper storage, temp changes, humidity and so on... and, of course, material breakdown as we have read in archived posts here. Though, I am still amazed when I review vintage plaques from collections which are still in their original state of preservation from BG and Caro collection photos when compared to all the known pieces which are not.
