Las Vegas developed all kinds of gimmicks to get people to come - cheap buffets, comped rooms, affordable stage shows. It succeeded. Now Vegas can turn its back on all of those and pile on other charges as well (resort fees, parking), and the natural consequence is that those who came for the first gimmicks will no longer be attracted.
But it's like Yogi Berra said - "nobody goes there anymore - it's too crowded." Las Vegas still has that appeal, at least for first-time visitors. But any tourist attraction manager will tell you the money is in the repeat visitors.
