I was going north on the Interstate, having missed the turn for the east bypass. I saw a sign that said exit for Arkansas and I knew I was in deep trouble. So I turned off onto the next city ramp and drove west; totally lost I stopped at a mom and pop store. There were 8, 10 young Black men lounging around. I hustled inside; there were 8, 10 more young Black men lounging around. I said to the counterman, "I'm lost." The place broke up. One of the young men said, "Where you going?" I told him the name of hotel--well to the east of the city. He said, "Come with me." We walked outside. He pointed down the street and said, "See that third red light?" "Yes," said I, and he then told me to turn right and gave me directions. Then he said, "You all stop back again some time but it's better if you do it in the day time." And the loungers broke up. I did what he said to do and then after making the turn and still in the dark part of the city saw the red idiot light go on--no gas. I found a second mom and pop store and got my gas and went back to my motel all in one piece.
