The trip from Bryson City to Louisville started out a little harrowing. We decided to take the route that “appeared” to be less treacherous. I am not certain what that road was like but the road we took was called the Dragon’s tail. It was a road where theoretically you could see yourself coming and going!!. Fred was very safe, took his time and we went about 20 miles in a little over an hour. At the end of the drive we met up with a dragon that just so happened was one of the attractions on the list!! Anyone that would drive specifically to see the dragon on that road would be sorely disappointed.
We got to Corbin Kentucky where there is everything Colonel. We went to the center of town where there is a statue of the big guy and then we went to the Sanders Café aka the Birthplace of Kentucky Fried Chicken. Legend has it the Colonel was somewhat profane and hot-tempered. He would go to franchises unannounced and if he didn’t like the taste of the chicken and gravy he would throw it on the floor. Today the Sanders Café is a functioning KFC as well as a museum dedicated to the Colonel. I would never make a vacation to go visit the Café, But if you are on Interstate 75 and near Corbin, get off and visit.
When we arrived in Louisville we went to the Cave Hill Cemetery. Now as far as a destination I would definitely make a trip to the cemetery as a destination. To begin with, Colonel Sanders is buried there as well as Muhammed Ali. However there is also the grave of the Corporate magician for Frito Lay, as well as Barney Bright. Barney Bright you ask, he was a local artist who sculpted many of the headstones in Cave Hill. He made one for himself depicting he and his wife in a somewhat exotic pose. I am attaching the picture from the app since we were not able to find his grave. According to the history there is a grave marker made by Tiffany, and some of the graves look like full on pieces of art. So if you are looking for an unusual and different type of vacation this is the spot!!!
