I bought a box of chips and jetons from a seller who had bought them at an auction (shown as a 'loft find'), most of which were generic jetons and chips (see my earlier posts this afternoon) but there were a few from the Harlequin Club in Cambridge and the Airport Casino Club (location unknown at the moment). The scans below show the best of what are available.
There can only be 2 sets of the Harlequin chips and jetons, with the 5 shilling chip being the rarest (i.e. only 2 available). There are also only 5 £1 chips in total of varying condition. Of the jetons, there are only 3 £1 jetons that have a hotstamp similar to the scan, with 3 or 4 more that are pretty worn. Most of the 10 shilling jetons are worn.
There is one chip listed on the chipguide that shows this as a fraternity club of Cambridge University. I am not sure where the attribution comes from (Charles, can you assist on this as you provided the scan of the £1 chip on the chipguide?) but I had not seen these before.
The Airport Casino Club chips have the name on one side and the denomination on the reverse. There is only one 2/6 (2 shillings and 6 pence – in effect a pre-decimalisation snapper) chip and as you will see it has a bad crack – sorry but this is the only one I have available. There is only one more 10 shilling chip with a hotstamp like this and 3 worn. This is the only £1 chip like this and then I have 4 more but all pretty worn. I have 5 or 6 of the 5 shilling chips with similar hotstamps. So this will be the only set available with all 4 chips and a £1 chip in this condition.
No further information about these chips available from a quick Google search.
I will put these sets on Ebay later this week but open to offers for the next 48 hours. Happy to scan both sides for anyone wanting to check. Also open to offers on individual chips and jetons if anyone really only wants a specific chip or jeton – I will send scans of the best available chips for each enquiry.
