I make this post with strong reservations that it probably will not do any good, but I can not let Mr. Cary's latest post go unchallenged.
"I'm still POed about the confrontation regarding admission at the LV show last year - was a full 10 on a stupidity scale of 1 to 10.
How any organization could put such an A-hole at the welcome sign-in desk is beyond imagination. The absolute height of stupidity!
Mr. Cary (no last name) approached the registration desk at the 2017 convention and wanted to attend the convention. Yes, he was willing to pay the admission fee, but refused to provide proper photo ID; per club regulations. I advised Mr. Cary that I could not register him without seeing valid ID. Mr. Cary said that he wanted to remain anonymous and refused to show ID. I told Mr. Cary that he would not be allowed into the convention floor without a badge. Mr. Cary loudly proclaimed "Oh, yes I will" and off he went to the entrance to the bourse floor where he was rebuffed by the security guard at the door that he must have a registration badge in order to be allowed to enter. Mr. Cary again came back to the registration area and loudly complained about the dumb rule requiring everyone to provide valid ID and boasts about how much money he spends at these shows and that he was a friend of Joe Pavlik. Mr. Cary then went to the table where the registration forms are prepared by convention visitors and submitted a properly filled out registration form, but the information on the form did not match the drivers license he presented as ID. Again Mr. Cary was refused a badge. He then stormed off again in pursuit of Convention Chairman, Sheldon Smith who upheld my initial decision to refuse admission but later said that he disagreed with my decision to allow Mr. Cary to come back the *next day*.
*Mr Cary posted on TCB the poor treatment he received at the show and I responded to Mr. Cary's post that if he came back the next day with proper ID he would be admitted to the show. Mr. Cary showed up the following day accompanied by his own two burly private security guards and provided proper ID and he was issued an admission badge after he complied with the club's security rule regarding proper ID.
Now; Here is the security reason for requiring ID that applies to everyone seeking admission to the show.... and the club reserves the right to refuse anyone on proper grounds.
1. At past conventions, some individuals have printed the name of "Donald Duck", or "Mickey Mouse" or "Santa Claus" on their registration forms that were presented to the Registration Committee and have been told to resubmit the registration form in proper fashion in order to receive an admission badge.
2.In the event of a potential problem on the bourse floor such as a theft or an incident at a dealer's table and the police need to be notified ... the first thing the police want to know from the dealer is a description of the suspected offender. Visualize this ... dealer responds, "the suspect was about 6 foot tall, white male, and had a Donald Duck or Annonymous name tag." Not much assistance to the police, is it?
3. With a proper registration name tag ("Jack Johnson" as an example) and registration information form, the police can scruitinize the club's registration paper work and look for Jack Johnson and obtain his address.
4. It's that simple folks. Mr. Cary wants to set his own rules and calls offensive names to club volunteers who have been abiding by and enforcing club rules for several years ... yes, some of the volunteers (including me) are elderly (for which I do not apologize). I'm thankful that I will have reached the age of 80, a gift, at this year's June convention. I hope that Mr. Cary is fortunate enough some day to reach that age too, and beyond. Having said that; unless, and until, the club President and/or or the Convention Chairman advises me that my volunteerism is no longer necessary, wanted, or needed ... I do not intend to "Step Aside" as non club member Mr. Cary has suggested.
For those who are new to the club; I have 30 years invested in this fine organization .... as the Founding President for 11 years (1988-1999). I was the first CCGTCC Convention Chairman, the first CCGTCC magazine Editor, and continuous volunteer at every convention this club has held to date and the recipient of several "CCGTCC Recruiter Of The Year" awards, of which I treasure. I don't need the likes of non club member Mr. Cary calling me names and besmirching my 30-year efforts in helping to build this club to where it is today. Yes, the membership numbers have been declining for many reasons, but not because of a lack of past and current leadership and appreciated VOLUNTEER efforts. We should be encouraging volunteer activity at all levels, not encouraging convention volunteers to "step aside" because they have reached a certain age that Mr. Cary has a problem with. Volunteerism is this club's strongest asset.
Now you know the full story of Mr. Cary's unwarranted beef regarding his non-admission charge at last year's convention. I would suspect that an overwhelming number of club members would have done the very same thing had they been in my shoes. Thanks for hearing me out. I'm sure that Mr. Cary will have a different version of this story, but I have credible witnesses who observed everything I have related above. Should Mr. Cary decide to attend the club's 2018 convention this June and provide proper registration and valid ID, he will be admitted to the show without incident.
