Happened to me right after I turned 21 in 1990.
Had a brand new POS Hyundai Excel.
Under 12,000 miles on it and blew a head gasket when the temp reached over 100 near Baker..luckily I had AAA and got towed from the middle of nowhere to Las Vegas.
Brought it to Fletcher Jones on Decatur and took a week for the repair. Flew back home, and flew back a week later and drove car home.
Even though was a major inconvenience, and I had to pay $140 for the extended tow and more for a couple of Southwest SAN to LAS flights, a few good things came out of this.
I found out my Aunt and Uncle were staying at the Excalibur for their grand opening weekend, so I was able to experience the festivities. Still remains the only time I was present for a grand opening of a Vegas casino. I didn't even know they were in town that weekend.
The car repair was about $1,500, but the warranty paid for it 100%.
After picking up my car I stopped at Whiskey Pete's on the drive back home..and I proceeded to go on a blackjack heater for the ages.
Betting from $2-$10 a hand, i proceeded to make enough money to pay for the extended tow, both flights, and still had enough winnings left over for a couple of Whisky Pete's outstanding $1 Hot Dogs and Shrimp Cocktails from back then..
