Archies right, they never did get a permanent license. The root cause was a bribe paid to two members of the New York State Liquor Authority in order to obtain a liquor license for their soon to open New York Playboy Club in 1961 Apparently, Hefner's less than stellar appearance before the NJCCC in 1982 to explain the bribe didn't help any.
