Drove to Las Vegas from So. Cal. two lane road, cars didn't have air condition, in the summer 110-120 in the Mojave desert, we would try and drive a night, but some times in a hurry and went during the day. You could rent a window water cooler entering the desert for 1.00 and return the cooler near Las Vegas. You also would have a canvass bag hung over the hood emblem filled with water which would be air cooled the drinking water. Always stopped a Baker the hottest spot in the desert, for a cold drink, the old building had walls 2 ft. thick and kept the inside cool (85) with fans. Gas was .23 a gallon, and rooms in Las Vegas 8.00 a night w/ .29 full breakfast. All hotels had a V shaped two story wooden buildings with guest rooms, and a pool between the rooms. Take 100.00 or less for 2-3 nights, and have more fun than I can describe. I'm talking late 50's and 60's.
