I also grew up in southern Florida, in Hollywood, and remember there was a jai-alai fronton in Dania (just north of Hollywood). But I was way too young to ever get into the place. My grandparents and parents went, but rarely. I think horse and dog races were more popular forms of gambling - Hollywood Dog Track and Gulfstream in Hallandale being the local tracks. The Miami gambling venues were around, too, but again, while I knew of them, I never could set foot in any of them.
Always wondered, how does one "throw" a jai-alai match? Toss strawberries onto the floor to make players slip and fall? YES - that is what people used to do when I raced bicycles here in California. Banana peels are too obvious - large and yellow - but a strawberry can bring down a bike and rider, CRASHH!!! I got out of that sport while I still had two matching collar bones.
