Since I've been retired a number of years I've paid more attention to saving a buck

For Teri and myself two personal sized bags like the one pictured below is fine (their also brings her large hand bag). On the way to the airport I pic a couple of subs from Jersey Mike's. At the airport I buy a couple 20 oz drinks. Whatever we don't finish is brought aboard the plane.
