Personally I never do it. Apart from having cartridges that did not work I once had one spill and destroy a printer.
When you have a household that churns out 4000-5000 prints a year the investment on a printer that costs $1200 (still going after 8 years) and inks that cost $500 a set but last 7000 pages is worthwhile.
