I think that our biggest successes of the past year would be the raising of the profile of our organization through the exhibits that the MOGH spearheaded in the El Cortez and, recently, in the Plaza. They give us a tangible presence in Las Vegas and will hopefully play a part in attracting membership to our organization and to our hobby. Another win for us was the institution of multi-year memberships which will hopefully stem the tide of attrition.
Our biggest challenges, of course, come in the way of membership retention, where there is no obvious solution. Another challenge that we have been experiencing is a lack of volunteers to fill positions that we need filled. By and large, our membership seems uninterested in getting involved in our efforts, and while I understand that we all have our own lives to live, and that this is not a professional organization where our activities could advance our lives in some way, we do applaud everyone who volunteers in any way, shape, or form in service to the Club.
As I am sure you are aware, Westen, we are a very small organization with barely over 1,000 members worldwide and with minimal resources. I know that in the past you have suggested hiring a salaried executive director, but our question is and has been… with what money? Never mind that salaried positions would set a precedent which we could never sustain, but the simple fact is that we have no resources with which to accomplish this. We are, and will likely always be, a volunteer-run organization and I don’t see this ever changing. If the scope of our organization and its goals drastically changes at some point then we can always reignite the conversation, but for now it is just not feasible.
