Question for matchbook collectors

I don't really collect matchbooks but I somehow would up with a number of casino matchbooks that I was looking to sell or trade. I'm just wondering if it affects the value in any way if the matches are removed carefully? Checking with my local post office they say it is not legal to mail matchbooks but online I've found several articles that say it's ok to mail them domestically within the USA as long as they are mailed SURFACE and not airmail. But in no case does it seem legal to mail them internationally. If I remove the matches then the problem goes away but does that make them less desirable or detract from their value? Any input would be appreciated.

I think true matchbook collectors remove them.
