Torrey-Without further proof I'd question that Harlem chip. NORVAL Embry took over the Harlem Club
from William "Bill" Bailey in 1958 and ran it until 1968 when he changed the name to the Soul Club.
His brother Armster took over the club when he was killed in a car crash in 1974. I remember the
50 cent chips on the 21 table were mixed with some saying Harlem Club and some with NB. The
style was completely different from your chip. There was always a car (Cadillac I think) parked in
front of the club with the license plates SOUL 00. I assumed it was the owner's. By the way Bill Bailey
was fond of wearing cowboy boots which is why, I assume, is the reason for the boot on the $5 chip.
You can read about the history of the Harlem Club as well as the Dixie, Peavine, and other places in
Lake-Evans block in the book "The River and the Railroad."
