YORKSHIRE CLUB Yorkshire Club The story of the Newport, Kentucky's,
famous Yorkshire Club is one intertwined with greed, crooks, and murder.
Located at 518 York Street during the turbulent 1940's, the Yorkshire Club
served as the Cleveland syndicate's largest sport's book. Like most of the
syndicate's gambling clubs, the Yorkshire was incredibly successful. The taxes
on the club showed an income of $200,000 a month. When considering that
most of the income was probably not reported, that figure can be assumed to be
much more. One of the more interesting stories of the Yorkshire Club comes
when a man named Rip Farley thought he could get away with stealing from
the mob, since he had a brother named Taylor who was connected with the
Eastern syndicate. Rip thought this would give him protection and one day
brought a gun into the club and robbed them for $25,000. Trying to settle this
without starting a war between the Cleveland and Eastern syndicate,
representatives of both factions met and decided to strike back together. Not
knowing whether Taylor was involved with his brother's heist, both of the men
were sentenced to death. Soon after, a car pulled up to the brothers on the
street and two blasts tore out - killing Rip and wounding Taylor. Fearing Taylor
would start trouble, it was decided that the hitman should be put to death. Thus
ended the possible turf war. Years later, the syndicate owners would be run out
of town by reformers. The club would close down and later turn into a teenage
dance club in the 1960's
