Dear Chipper Roger & Fellow Chippers,
Thanks for sharing these awesome Maui Sunset photos!!!
Seeing 'm brought back happy fun memories.
My young Bride and I honeymooned in Maui and then spent the first year of your marriage living and working in Wailea/Kihei Maui.
I worked at the Stouffers Wailea Beach Resort Hotel. My Parents leased a fine jewelry store in the hotel. I was 30 years old. Newly married and bored out of my mind. OOPS! Not with my Bride. LOL!! Bored because, in those early days in Kihei, Wailea was a new area. And the only tourist that vacationed there were:
The "NEWLY WEDS AND THE NEARLY DEADS!"
After a few month of living there, we would fly back to HNL every weekend. Airfare was $35.00 each way! Now its $150.00!!
Ahh! Back to the Big City!!!
As a treat for my Father, I would dive for the large underwater Opehi, commonly in the Mainland known as Lippets. These Opehi lived and clug to the underwater rock in the ocean. I would use a putty speader tool to slip and pry them off the rocks.
Then I'd remove them from their shells and Jar 'm. My Dad would eat them raw or BBQ grill 'm. This was a real Hawaii delicacy!!
I would also pick Ogo/limo.....seaweed. I would flash boil them and pickle them in shoyu, vingar, Maui onions, and a little brown sugar.
Refrig for a few days.
My Father always greeted me and after seeing the "pupu" = appetizers I had harvested, he would break out a bottle of Crown Royal.
He was a very happy guy now that his Maui Son had arrived back with all his ONO PUPUs for his PAU HANA!!! (Delicious appetizers for his after work happy hour!).
Those were the Good Ole Days in Maui!!!
Fond Memories, too!
Aloha and Okole MaLuna to all my Fellow Chippers!!!
