drove a Model A from Springfield, S. Dak. to Long Beach, Ca. (1636 miles)....at 40 mph & 10 mpg (except up hill) looking for work; the other two didn't find anything and drove back. We had a hot stove; made coffee; coasted down long mountain roads; got behind a big semi in Utah going up a mountain at about 25 mph on a 2 lane road; car tried to pass us on the right shoulder (about 20 or so cars behind us) and the trucker turned right and made him stop--so he dropped back to car # 23 or so. We met the trucker at the next truck stop and he bought us breakfast. We slept outside in sleeping bags. Swam in cold lakes in our underwear which we would then hang out the windows to dry out; cars passing us would honk and wave.
