NCR - I so rarely reply to...

...things that have nothing to do with casino related items, but this one - today - has me scared.

We have all worked with those people we half-heartedly joke about "going postal" or "hope I'm not here when he comes back all dressed as Rambo". Somebody today joked about it today at the TV station I work at. "Wonder when so-and-so will show up and go postal."

But I question whether or not the person was a nut job. I think we, as a society, need to stop making going and getting mental health such a bad thing. I have a friend who has done SEVERAL tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, yet is afraid to go even talk to a counselor because it will end up in his personnel file if he get the free help, but can't afford to go to one off base.

As a society, we treat people differently who have mental health problems than we do if they have physical health problems. If someone ends up in the hospital for 2 months because of a motorcycle accident, we welcome them back with open arms; if that same person goes to a mental hospital for 2 months, we all start asking questions & wonder aloud if he is fit to come back to work.

So I ask this - when are we going to treat mental health the same way we treat physical health?
