Just completed last year so the F1 guys could come back to the US.
As it stands now, there are four races a year at the track. F1 on the road course. Indy 500, Brickyard, and the IROC. Nothing else. It used to be one race a year until NASCAR came in.
Old Road America, Elkhart Lake, WI used to make it on Two races a year. SCCA June Sprints and the 500. Part of the secret was making it a wildlife preserve the rest of the time. Now there is something every weekend from May until November.
As far as sanctioning bodies, the AAA used to do that for many groups until the 50's when the Govt. put an end to racing on public roads. The AAA also sanctioned the Indy 500. I'd have to look for exact dates, because back when Eddie Rickenbacher owned the track there might have been some other group.
Meanwhile for the issue of CART/IRL I enjoy both, so I'm not one of the bashers who takes sides. I do prefer road racing over oval racing. (you know where the cars turn left AND right)
What's the NASCAR line? Real cars have doors, even if you have to crawl through a window to get into them? lol
