I ran into a few SNAFUs also when I went bouncing around Europe on my own back in 2010. The big difference is that I traveled by train and my bags didn't get lost.
I remember well standing in line in a cold rain in Paris to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower and the long and a little scary walks from my hotel to the nearest Metro station after dark.
