When I met Sandy, she lived in Whitehaven, which was then an aptly named suburb of Memphis which is now almost entirely black; poetic justice of sorts. Her home was a couple of miles from Graceland, which is on a main thoroughfare going south from Memphis.
At that time, there was nothing across the street or on either side of the Presley property. Now, Graceland is surrounded by what is arguably the most tacky collection of opportunists and hangers on (including the "official" Graceland visitor center, which is run by the state, the county or some other government agency, I think).
If you were/are an Elvis fan, be prepared to be disappointed and depressed by what you'll see everywhere other than Graceland itself (which is nevertheless worth visiting).
