I think I had the scanner set so that the picture came out this way without resizing it. This is a screen capture of the info from one of the Pick'em scans.
DPI was 180. I scanned several times trying different DPI settings until the resulting scan, viewed in "original size" was as large as would fit widthwise on my laptop screen, without needing to scroll.

On the other hand, Whatever program you use to resize your pictures, must have some different sampling settings that you can fool with, The one I use, IrfanView, always does well downsizing a larger scan.
