The "Illegal Of The Day" team has put Club names to a lot of chips that wouldn't normally make it to an "Illegal Of The Day" post. We do send all to be entered into TGT. I tend to post the "Big" stories, murder, mayhem, organized crime, etc. As I've stated in the past the small operators were the heart and soul of our illegal club collections.
Westen Charles found the GEF chips. Ed Hertel hustled up the Club name.
No records on the rectangle heart mold but they were found together with the hubs.
George E Fisher
136-1/2 E. Wayne St. K.
Lima, OH
550 chips – 4/16/37
Only 1 black hub found.
No Club name on the hub Mason record.
Take it away Ed.
Looks like it probably is the Club Cigar Store in Delphos, Ohio (15 miles NW of Lima).
From what I can see, the address on the chips is a boarding house. The Club Cigar Store was located at 311 N. Main in Delphos and run by George and Robert Fisher. They were busted in 1943 for gambling. They sold the business in 1946 and it was later busted for gambling under the new guy.
1943
My note: I did not check TGT but I see 5 new to me illegal clubs in Delphos, Ohio in the below article including the Club Cigar Store. I am from the Cincinnati area and never heard of Delphos. $50 would have been a big fine in 1943. I was born in 1942. When I was 7, 1949, I started to get an allowance of $1 per week. It was a lot of money to me.
1943
1946
My note: Emmit Snyder was busted for gambling after he bought the Club Cigar Store. Wonder what chips he was using?
1948
Three more Delphos, Ohio illegal club named in the above article. That makes 7 we need chips from. Maybe this story is bigger that I thought it was.
I will be posting some of the smaller story ID's we found from time to time.
