When I was in college (Michigan State University), we ran some dorms as summertime convention centers as you are suggesting. When I took the bar exam, I stayed in the same building where I had lived as a student.

The university also had a full convention center and hotel for year-round use; students in the hospitality programs were able to work and learn there.

I think the good news from this proposal is diversified use instead of another vacant eyesore.
