I think she was kind of use to it as I am one of eight children. We didn't have a lot of money so the kids did whatever to earn some spending money. The movies theater cost was .25 -.35 and you needed at least .05 for candy. The job before I was ten was to catch roaches. Most people don't remember that roaches were used as fishing bait. Before the cricket was invented I guess. My little finger could open a watermeter lid in .02 seconds and then it was grab grab grab. I sold them for .005 yea 1/2 cent a piece and the bait shop sold them for 1 cent. I even invented some roach traps that were very efffective. Take a mayonaise jar and wash it very clean any film on it would allow the roaches to climb the sides. Bury it up to the lip and put potatoe skins or banana peels it it and leave for the night.
All of this let up to a life of being causious with my money and I retired when I was 48 yrs old. I had enoungh to live on until I was 110 given normal inflation rates and a few unplanned disasters.
